The PNK passive night vision device is a binocular system designed for night-time road observation, allowing drivers to see the road and surrounding terrain clearly. It has been integrated into various types of armoured vehicles, becoming standard equipment in its class for the Polish Army. Among its applications are state-of the art self-propelled mortars RAK, 8x8 wheeled armoured personnel carriers ROSOMAK, and older vehicles such as the BWP-1, BWR, T-72, and PT-91. The device has also seen significant export success.
The main advantage of the PNK, as compared to thermal imaging instruments, lies in its use of two independent optical paths combined with modern image intensification tubes. These provide a panoramic image nearly identical to what one would see with the naked eye, along with excellent image depth and shapes perception. This ensures that the driver has optimal conditions for night-time operation, including better assessment of distance and speed.
